Walter George Sancomb, the son of Frank and Helena (Ostrom) Sancomb, was born on February 20, 1915, in Schenectady, New York. He attended St. John the Baptist Elementary, McKinley Junior High, and Nott Terrace High School. Before entering the service, Walter worked as an antique dealer.
On August 11, 1942, Walter enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He held the rank of Corporal and served with the 503rd Bomber Squadron, 346th Bomber Group. He was assigned to Dyersburg Army Air Base in Tennessee. Walter was killed in the crash of a B-17F Flying Fortress five miles southeast of McKenzie, Tennessee, on August 9, 1943. He is buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
