William D. VanDerhoof, the son of Milton VanDerhoof, was born on September 16, 1895, in Amsterdam, New York. He worked as a bookkeeper for the Amsterdam firm Kaiser and Frydenborg. William was injured near the Mexican border during the US Punitive Campaign and was honorably discharged from Company H, 2nd Infantry. It is unknown why William was in Schenectady before reenlisting during World War I.

On July 17, 1917, William enlisted in the United States Army. On May 17, 1918, he was deployed overseas aboard the USS President Grant. He was a Corporal of the Machine Company, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. William died on October 26, 1918, at the First Australian Hospital in Rouen, France, following appendix surgery.  He is buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Amsterdam, New York.
