William John Serrell Jr. was born in Schenectady, New York, on June 11, 1911. He grew up in the city of Schenectady and attended local schools. Before entering the military, he worked for General Electric.
On February 1, 1944, William enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Wheeler in Georgia, where he was a skilled rifleman. He was a private serving with the 320th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division. Before being sent to war in August of 1944, he was stationed in Maryland. On August 13, 1944, at Mortain, France, William was killed in action. He is buried in the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna, New York.
