Ransom Mead Barrett was born in Margaretville, Delaware County, New York, on March 5, 1887. By 1907, he was living in Schenectady, New York. Before joining the military, Ransom was a member of the Odd Fellows and worked in the restaurant industry.
On July 31, 1918, Ransom enlisted in the United States Army. He was a private serving with Bakery Company, 490 Q.M.C. Until he fell ill and was sent back to Schenectady, New York, Ransom was stationed at Camp Upton in New York. On April 5, 1919, after World War I had ended, Ransom died from his illness at the post hospital in Rotterdam, New York. He is buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
