Arthur Van Voorhis Crego, the son of Charles and Mary (Nelson) Crego, was born on May 13, 1893, in Claverack, New York. To work for General Electric, he relocated to Schenectady. Arthur was a skilled paddler and swimmer who belonged to the Schenectady Boat Club.

On February 22, 1916, Arthur enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Corporal and served with Company C, 102nd Field Battalion, 27th Infantry Division. On October 17, 1918, while fighting in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, Arthur was killed in Battle. He is buried in the Claverack Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery, Claverack, New York.
