Bernard Frederick Geren, the son of John and Julia Geren, was born on June 1, 1894, in the Village of Clayville, New York. By 1905, he was living in Schenectady with his parents. He graduated from the local high school and worked as a stenographer for the General Electric Company before joining the military.

On June 5, 1918, Bernard enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He was the Ships Writer and had the rank of Seaman. Bernard died on December 20, 1918, in a US Marine Hospital on Staten Island, the cause of death unknown. He is buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
