Henry Herbert Leland, the son of Herbert and Mary (Zandt) Leland, was born on July 28, 1891, in Schenectady, New York. He played the clarinet and saxophone and belonged to Musicians Local No. 85. The Schenectady Illuminating Company was Henry's employer.

On June 21, 1916, Henry enlisted in the United States Army. He was the bandmaster for Headquarters Company, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. On November 5, 1918, influenza claimed Henry's life in Rouen, France. He is buried in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
