Merrill Bly Lupold was born in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, on January 5, 1893. After earning his degree from Penn State University, he relocated to the city of Schenectady to begin working for General Electric.
On July 18, 1917, Merrill enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of master electrician and was serving with Company C, 102nd Field Signal Battalion, 27th Infantry Division. There are two conflicting accounts regarding Merrill's death on January 18, 1919, in Europe. One account states that he died from meningitis, while the other claims that he succumbed to the effects of being gassed.He is buried in the Pomfret Manor Cemetery in Sunbury, Pennsylvania.
