Franz Fridolin Schilling, the son of Fridolin and Catherine Schilling, was born on September 26, 1890, in Albany, New York. He went to Albany public schools. He eventually relocated to Schenectady, where he lived on North Wendell Avenue. Franz worked for General Electric and was a member of the Mohawk Golf Club.

On November 27, 1917, Franz enlisted in the United States Army. He was a member of the 91st Aero Squadron and had the rank of First Lieutenant. On July 2, 1918, Franz was killed in action while serving as an aerial observer with the 91st Artillery in France. He is buried in Greenbush Cemetery, Rensselaer County, New York.
