Joseph A. Battaglia was born in Cook County, Illinois, on August 3, 1924. He moved to Schenectady when he was a young boy and lived on Cutler Street. He attended Washington Irving Junior High School and Vocational High School.
In November 1942, Joseph enlisted in the United States Army and began his training at Fort Eustis, Virginia. He held the rank of Private and served with the 80th Anti-aircraft Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division. On January 7, 1945, Joseph died from wounds sustained in the Battle of the Bulge. He is buried in the Henri Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial, Belgium.
