Joseph J. Caprara was born in the Town of Rotterdam, Schenectady County, New York, on January 29, 1920. By 1935, he was living in the city of Schenectady, New York. He had worked for the Schenectady Gazette as a newsboy. After graduating from Mont Pleasant High School, Joseph relocated to Massachusetts, where he began working for his uncle.
In 1939, Joseph enlisted in the United States Army. He was a technician fourth-grade serving with the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division. Beginning with D-Day, Joseph had participated in seven European campaigns. On his way home for discharge from the army on June 11, 1945, Joseph fell from a truck. On June 12, 1945, the next day, he died. He is buried in St. Cyril and Method Cemetery, Rotterdam, New York.
