James Francis Dorning, the son of Leonard and Catherine (Keegan) Dorning, was born on May 8, 1918, in Schenectady, New York. Before enlisting in the military, he worked for General Electric.

On March 12, 1942, James enlisted in the United States Army and began his training at Camp Upton in New York. He held the rank of Private First Class and served with the 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division. On October 31, 1944, James was killed in battle in France. He is buried in the Henri Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial, Belgium.
