World War II (1939-1945)

James Francis Dorning was born in Schenectady, New York, on May 8, 1918. He grew up in the city of Schenectady and graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1937. Before entering the military, he worked for General Electric.

On March 12, 1942, James enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Upton in New York. He was a  private first class serving with the 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division. On October 31, 1944, James was killed in battle in France. He is buried in the Henri Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial in Belgium.
