John Schuyler Hemstreet, the son of James and Grace Hemstreet, was born on April 13, 1920, in Scotia, New York. He attended Scotia Glenville High School and worked for General Electric after graduating.
On December 12, 1941, five days after Pearl Harbor, John enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Private and served with the 111th Field Artillery Battalion, 29th Infantry Division. On October 17, 1944, John was killed in battle in Germany. He is buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery Memorial, Netherlands.
