World War II (1939-1945)

John Kopczynski Jr. was born in Schenectady, New York, on May 14, 1917. He was living in the town of Niskayuna in Schenectady County until 1930, and then he moved with his family to Avenue A in the city of Schenectady. He attended Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana, after graduating from Nott Terrace High School in 1936.

In March 1941, John enlisted in the United States Army. He was a first lieutenant serving with Company C, 179th Infantry Regiment. In September 1943, he left for the war and took part in the beachhead campaigns at Salerno, Casino, and Anzio, and on August 19, 1944, John was killed in battle in Southern France. He is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Schenectady, New York.
