Matthew Theodore Kropkowski was born in Amsterdam, New York, on November 29, 1915. By 1930, he was living in the city of Schenectady with his family. Matthew was a student at the Reuters Bowling Academy and also bowled for the Catholic Church League, Schenectady League, and Gazette League. Before entering the military, he was working for the American Locomotive Company.
On April 17, 1942, Matthew enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Upton in New York. He was a private first class serving with Company A, 774th Tank Battalion, 7th Armored Division. On March 20, 1945, Matthew was killed in battle in France. He is buried in St. Adalbert Cemetery in Rotterdam, New York.
