Herbert Arthur Lewis, the son of George and Iva (Ackart) Lewis, was born on May 5, 1919, in Schenectady, New York. After completing his high school education at Mont Pleasant, he enrolled at the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance.

Herbert enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. In Arizona's Kingman Army Airfield, he was a cadet in aviation. On January 6, 1944, right outside the main entrance of the airbase, Herbert was killed when a transcontinental fast freight collided with his army bus that was crammed with air cadets. He is buried in Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie, New York.
