Joseph Martorelli was born in Palatine Bridge, New York, on May 31, 1923. By 1930, he was living in the city of Schenectady with his family. He graduated from Nott Terrace High School, and before entering the military, he worked for the American Locomotive Company.
In November 1942, Joseph enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Breckenridge in Kentucky. He was a private first class serving with Company I, 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division. On April 24, 1944, Joseph was killed in battle in Italy. He is buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Schenectady, New York.
