World War II (1939-1945)

Walter Merrill was born in Worcester in Otsego County, New York, on February 23, 1910. By 1930, he and his wife Helena were living in the town of Rotterdam in Schenectady County. Before entering the military, he worked for General Electric.

On April 6, 1944, Walter enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Croft in South Carolina. He was a private first class serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. On October 19, 1944, he was deployed to serve overseas, and on April 9, 1945, Walter was killed in battle in Germany. He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial in France.
