Adelphis Joseph Messier, son of Ralph and Lillian (Loiselle) Messier, was born on October 3, 1918, in Schenectady, New York. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School and worked for General Electric.
In May 1942, Adelphis enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He held the rank of Private and served with 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. On November 22, 1943, Adelphis went missing in action during the Battle of Tarawa. He is remembered at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii.
The Battle of Tarawa was fought between the United States and Japan at the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands, and was part of Operation Galvanic.
