World War II (1939-1945)

Adelphis Joseph Messier was born in Schenectady, New York, on October 3, 1918. He grew up in the city of Schenectady, graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1938, and worked for General Electric before entering the military.

In May 1942, Adelphis enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was a private serving with the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. On November 22, 1943, Adelphis went missing in action during the Battle of Tarawa. He is remembered at the Honolulu Memorial, Courts of the Missing in Hawaii.

*The Battle of Tarawa was fought between the United States and Japan at the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands, and was part of Operation Galvanic.
