Richard W. Nellis was born in Watertown, New York, on April 27, 1920. He grew up in Watertown, graduated from Watertown High School in 1937, and then earned his degree from Albany Business College in 1940. By 1941, he was living in the city of Schenectady and working for General Electric as an accountant in the company's payroll division.
On January 15, 1942, Richard enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. On January 15, 1943, off the coast of Jones Beach, New York, he was killed when his P-47 Thunderbolt caught fire. He is buried in the North Watertown Cemetery in Watertown, New York.
