John Young Nichol was born in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, on April 15, 1917. John and his parents arrived in the United States on March 23, 1925, with Schenectady as their final destination. In 1935, he graduated from Mont Pleasant High School, and after graduation, he started working for General Electric and the credit department of the Schenectady Union Star; he also was a member of the St. Andrews Society and the Clan MacRae.
In June 1941, John enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Upton in New York. He was a staff sergeant serving with Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 42nd Infantry Division. John died unexpectedly on October 12, 1944, while stationed at Camp Gruber in Oklahoma. He is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam, New York.
