George Robert Race, the son of Nicholas and Helen Race, was born on April 18, 1919, in Schenectady, New York. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School and completed the General Electric Company's apprentice program in June 1942.
In October 1942, George enlisted in the United States Merchant Marine and held the rank of Engine Cadet. On February 7, 1943, the SS Henry R. Mallory was torpedoed and sank; George was never found. George is remembered on the Mont Pleasant Neighborhood War Memorial, Schenectady, New York.
