Walter George Sancomb was born in Schenectady, New York, on February 20, 1915. He grew up in the city of Schenectady and attended St. John the Baptist Elementary, McKinley Junior High, and Nott Terrace High School. Before entering the service, he worked as an antique dealer.
On August 11, 1942, Walter enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a corporal serving with the 503rd Bomber Squadron, 346th Bomber Group, and was assigned to Dyersburg Army Air Base in Tennessee. Walter was killed in the crash of a B-17F Flying Fortress five miles southeast of McKenzie, Tennessee, on August 9, 1943. He is buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Schenectady, New York.
