John Francis (Jack) Sanders, the son of Fred and Abigail (Wilkins) Sanders, was born on July 10, 1919, in Colonie, New York. By 1925, he had moved to Schenectady. Prior to working for General Electric, he ran the Union Stamp Company after earning his diploma from Mont Pleasant High School.
In September 1942, John enlisted in the United States Merchant Marine. He held the rank of Merchant Seaman Machinist and was aboard the American Motor tanker Atlantic Sun. John was lost at sea on February 15, 1943, when a German U-boat destroyed the Atlantic Sun. He is remembered at Vale Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
