Vincent D. Sapone, the son of Vito and Jennie Sapone, was born on September 2, 1920, in New Jersey.  By 1930, he and his family had settled in Schenectady. Before entering the service, he graduated from Mont Pleasant High School and worked for General Electric.

On July 31, 1942, Vincent enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant and served with the 350th Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group. On October 8, 1943, Vincent was on a mission to strike targets in Bremen, Germany. During the bomb run, Vincent's aircraft was hit by flak and exploded. His remains were retrieved by German soldiers and buried in a local cemetery before being returned to the United States in 1950. He is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
