Roswell John Spoor was born in Middleburgh, New York, on May 12, 1919. He frequently moved during his childhood, but by 1936, he had settled in Schenectady, where he graduated from St. Joseph's Academy. Before entering the military, he was working for a department store.
On July 22, 1941, Roswell enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a staff sergeant serving with the 571st Bomb Squadron. Roswell was a radio operator and gunner aboard the B-17 Flying Fortress "Hap's Hazard" when it was shot down over Berlin, Germany, on May 8, 1944; the whole crew was lost. He is buried alongside the rest of his crew at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Missouri.
