John Edward Titterington, the son of Samuel and Lula (VanKuren) Titterington, was born on February 28, 1918, in Saratoga, New York. He grew up in Saratoga and Troy, New York, and then moved to Schenectady after marrying. He received his diploma from Troy High School. After arriving in Schenectady, he began working for General Electric.
John joined the National Guard's Company A on February 13, 1934, and was later enlisted into the United States Army in October 1944, where he was assigned to Company F, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in August 1941 after receiving training at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He was assigned to Honolulu in March 1942 and advanced to first lieutenant in February 1943. He was stationed in Hawaii before being sent to Saipan. On July 11, 1944, John was killed in combat during the Battle of Saipan. He is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii.
