Benjamin Craig Wassell was born in Schenectady, New York, on November 20, 1919. He grew up in the city of Schenectady, graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1937, and earned an associate's degree in business administration from Green Mountain Junior College before continuing his education at Syracuse University. Before entering the military, he worked for General Electric and was a Knight of Pythias member.
Benjamin enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He underwent his training at Camp Croft in South Carolina. He was a first lieutenant serving with the 568th Bomber Squadron, 390th Bomber Group, Heavy. Benjamin was on board a Flying Fortress when he was killed in combat on April 18, 1944, while on a mission over Germany. He is buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial in Belgium.
