About

World War II (1939-1945)

Gordon Lynn Whitmyre was born in Schenectady, New York, on January 12, 1919. He grew up in the village of Scotia in Schenectady County and graduated in 1937 from Scotia-Glenville High School, where he was a member of the football team and the photography club. After graduating from high school, he received his bachelor of science in forestry from the University of New Hampshire.

On July 14, 1941, Gordon enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps.  He was a flight instructor at Waco Army Flying Field in Texas. On November 11, 1942, Gordon was on a cross-country training flight when his plane crashed near Palestine, Texas. His death certificate indicates that he was being returned to Scotia, New York, for burial. Both of his parents are buried in the Old Reformed Church Cemetery in Scotia, suggesting that he is likely buried there as well.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.
