James Edward Hicks, the son of Jesse and Anna Hicks, was born on November 5, 1930, in Schenectady, New York. In 1949, he received his diploma from St. Joseph's High School. James was employed by the Wallace Company and attended the State University Institute of Utica to study retailing.

James enlisted in the United States Army on October 9, 1951, and attended Fort Breckinridge, Kentucky for his basic training. He held the rank of Private First Class and served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On October 14, 1952, James was killed during the Battle of Triangle Hill. He is buried in the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, New York.
