George Richard Kelly was born in Schenectady, New York, on October 17, 1929. He grew up in the city of Schenectady and played basketball at Nott Terrace High School, where he graduated in 1947.
Soon after graduating, George enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was a corporal serving with the Machine Gun Platoon, Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. George died on June 7, 1951, as a result of wounds sustained while defending his position on Hill 516 during the Battle of the Punchbowl. He is buried in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna, New York.
