Herbert Leroy Tuttle Jr., the son of Herbert and Myrtle (Crandall) Tuttle, was born on July 16, 1949, in Saratoga Springs, New York. He attended Linton High School and worked at the Krueger's Food Market.

On August 3, 1966, Herbert enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He held the rank of Lance Corporal and served with Company H, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade, 4th Marine Regiment. Herbert was shot while stationed in the Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, and died from his wounds at Camp Drake, Japan, on May 9, 1968. He is buried in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie, New York.
