David Stephen Vollmer, the son of George and Rita (Hammond) Vollmer, was born on August 28, 1947, in Amsterdam, New York. As a young child, he relocated to Scotia, New York, where he later attended Scotia Glenville High School.
David enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1967, going to Parris Island, North Carolina, for his basic training and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, for his advanced training. He held the rank of Lance Corporal and served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On November 17, 1968, David was killed in combat in the South Vietnamese province of Quang Nam. He is buried in the Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam, New York.
