Robert Stuart Cragin Jr., the son of Robert "Bob" and Nellie (Lampman) Cragin, was born on June 21, 1944, in Schenectady, New York. He received his diplomas from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1966 and Niskayuna High School in 1962.

In February 1967, Robert enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of First Lieutenant and served with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On February 26, 1968, Robert was killed in combat close to Can Tho in the South Vietnamese province of Phong Dinh.  He is buried in the Memory Gardens Cemetery and Memorial Park, Colonie, New York.
