World War II (1939-1945)

Vernon Emery Balch was born in Clymer, Pennsylvania, on August 31, 1923. In 1940, he moved to Schenectady, New York, to begin working for General Electric.

On February 16, 1943, Vernon enlisted in the United States Army. He underwent military training at Camp McCain, Mississippi; Camp Pickett, Virginia; and Fort Meade, Maryland. He was a private first class serving with the 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On March 7, 1945, Vernon was killed in combat in Germany. He is buried in the Henri Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial, Belgium.
