Walter Edwin Kadel Jr. was born in Port Jervis, New York, on July 16, 1924. He relocated to the city of Schenectady after graduating from Port Jervis High School to work for General Electric.
On July 17, 1942, Walter enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He earned his silver wings at the Army Air Forces Flexible Gunnery School at Tyndall Field in Florida. He was a staff sergeant serving with the 444th AAF Bomb Squadron. Walter was an aerial gunner aboard a B-26 Marauder Bomber when it crashed over Northern Italy on August 23, 1944. He is buried in the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Port Jervis, New York.
