John McBride Jr. was born in Troy, New York, on October 29, 1913. He graduated from Troy High School, where he excelled as a quarterback; he then graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before moving to Schenectady in 1935. Before entering the military, he worked as an executive in the advertising department at General Electric.
In September 1943, John enlisted in the United States Army. He was a private first class serving with the 357th Infantry Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division. On January 12, 1945, John was killed during the Battle of the Bulge. He is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, New York.
