About
Marcel Oliver Fontaine, the son of Eugene and Clara (Girard) Fontaine, was born on May 27, 1896, in Cohoes, New York. It's unclear why Marcel was living in Schenectady at the time of his enlistment.
On July 18, 1917, Marcel enlisted in the United States Army. On May 17, 1918, he was deployed overseas aboard the USS President Grant. Marcel was a Private First Class with Company E, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. Marcel was killed in battle on September 29, 1918, in Bony, France, at Guillemont Farm. Because it is unknown where he was buried, he is memorialized at the Somme American Cemetery and Memorial in France.
