John Joseph Gunning was born in Amesbury Essex County, Massachusetts, on July 4, 1896. It is unknown why John was residing in Schenectady when he enlisted, but he must have been a member of the community because he is commemorated on one of the city's World War I memorials.
On May 5, 1917, John enlisted in the United States Army. On May 17, 1918, he was sent overseas aboard the U.S. Army troopship USS President Grant. He was a private serving with Company F, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. On September 30, 1918, John died of wounds sustained while fighting in France. He is buried in the Somme American Cemetery and Memorial in France.
