Richard Frederick Callahan was born in the Town of Niskayuna, Schenectady County, New York, on October 8, 1924. He attended Nott Terrace High School, where he played football and was a well-known speed skater.
Richard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was a private first class serving with Battery L, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division. Richard was lost overboard from the USS Henry on February 9, 1945, while en route to Iwo Jima. He is remembered at the Honolulu Memorial, Courts of the Missing, Hawaii.
