Carl Stephen Gaworecki, the son of Joseph and Mary (Desz) Gaworecki, was born on October 10, 1925, in Schenectady, New York. He attended Nott Terrace High School before entering the military.

In September 1943, Carl enlisted in the United States Navy. He received his basic training at Sampson Naval Training Station and then went on to graduate from the US Navy School at Harvard before being sent overseas. "Keep a little fire burning; however small, however hidden."

~Cormac McCarthy

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.
