World War II (1939-1945)

James Michael Hollenbeck was born in Schenectady, New York, on October 3, 1920. He grew up in the town of Rotterdam on Guilderland Avenue in Schenectady County. Before joining the Marines, he worked for General Electric and served in the New York National Guard.

In October 1943, James enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He completed his basic training at Parris Island in South Carolina before moving on to Jacksonville, Florida, to train at the Naval Air Station. He was a private first class serving with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines. He was sent overseas in September 1944, and on February 28, 1945, James was killed during the battle on Iwo Jima. He is buried in the Evergreen Memorial Park in Colonie, New York.
