Charles E. Smith, the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Barringer) Smith, was born in 1905, in Schenectady, New York. He attended Horrace Mann School and Nott Terrace High School. Before enlisting in the military, he worked for Stowes Upholstery. 

In June 1941, Charles enlisted in the United States Army and was trained in Fort Riley, Kansas. He held the tank of Private First Class and served with Company G, 3rd Battalion, 21st Engineer Aviation Regiment. Charles participated in the Tunisian, Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno Campaigns. On August 23, 1945, Charles died of a heart attack while awaiting transportation in Italy. He is buried in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
