Alva H. Beekman Jr., the son of Alva and Carrie (Warren) Beekman, was born on June 24, 1889, in Johnstown, New York. By 1900, he was living in Schenectady, New York. He was a carpenter by trade and worked for his father before joining the military.

Alva enlisted in the United States Army on March 7, 1918, and had his basic training at Camp Greene in North Carolina. He held the rank of Sergeant and served with Company F, 58th Infantry Regiment. Alva was killed on October 5, 1918, after being wounded in the stomach by a machine gun in the Argonne Forest. He is buried in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
