Anthony Encinas, the son of Secundino and Pauline Encinas, was born on April 14, 1922, in Schenectady, New York. Prior to enlisting in the military, Anthony attended Nott Terrace High School and worked for General Electric.
Anthony enlisted in the US Navy and had a rank of Seaman First Class. On June 10, 1943, he was on board the American Turbine Tanker ESSO Gettysburg when it was torpedoed twice by a U-66 (Friedrich Markworth) submarine. One hundred miles Southeast of Savannah, Georgia, the ESSO Gettysburg sank. 15 crew members made it out alive while 57 perished. Anthony is remembered on the East Coast Memorial, Manhattan, New York.
