Benjamin Craig Wassell, the son of Benjamin and Isabella (Wilkie) Wassell, was born on November 20, 1919, in Schenectady, New York. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School and earned an associate's degree in business administration from Green Mountain Junior College before continuing his education at Syracuse University. He worked for the General Electric Company and was a Knight of Pythias member.

Benjamin enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and attended Camp Croft in South Carolina for his training. Benjamin received a Marksmanship award while training. He held the rank of First Lieutenant and served with the 568th Bomber Squadron, 390th Bomber Group, Heavy. Benjamin was on board a Flying Fortress when he was killed in combat on April 18, 1944, while on a mission over Germany. He is buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial, Belgium.
