Calvin Nealon Powles, the son of John and Sadie Powles, was born on July 1, 1925, in Rotterdam, New York. He participated in the band and orchestra while attending Draper High School. He was an employee at the Schenectady General Depot.

Calvin enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1943 and held the rank of Seaman First Class. From Pensacola, Florida, Calvin was returning home on leave via train. When he didn't arrive his family started to worry. In Rome, New York, Calvin was discovered by the side of the New York Central railroad rails. According to the scenario, on June 17, 1945, Calvin was riding on the coach's platform when the door opened and the train swerved, throwing him outside. His cause of death was never officially reported in the newspaper; only a theory was. Calvin is buried in Viewland Cemetery, Rotterdam, New York.
