World War II (1939-1945)
Carl Stephen Gaworecki was born in Schenectady, New York, on October 10, 1925. He grew up in the city of Schenectady and was a student at Nott Terrace High School before entering the military.
In September 1943, Carl enlisted in the United States Navy. He completed his basic training at Sampson Naval Training Station and then went on to graduate from the US Navy School at Harvard before being sent overseas. He was a machinist mate third class and was assigned to the USS Ticonderoga. On January 21, 1945, the USS Ticonderoga was attacked by eight kamikaze planes, two of which collided with the ship; one hit the flight deck, while the other struck the starboard side, causing severe damage to the ship. Carl was last seen running across the hangar deck to his station. He is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines and at St. Mary's Cemetery in Schenectady, New York.
