World War II (1939-1945)

Carmen Charles DeMaina was born in Schenectady, New York, on August 9, 1918. He grew up in the city of Schenectady, and while a student at Mont Pleasant High School, he participated in the track and cross-country teams and the photography club. He worked for General Electric after graduating in 1938.

In 1943, Carmen enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Fort Stewart in Georgia. He was a  private first class serving with the 843rd Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion. In January 1945, he was sent overseas and served with his battalion in China, India, and Burma. While in Sichuan, China, on July 21, 1945, Carmen drowned; he was never found. He is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines.
