World War II (1939-1945)

Charles E. Smith was born in Schenectady, New York, in 1905. He grew up in the city of Schenectady on Craig Street and was a student at Horrace Mann School and Nott Terrace High School. Before enlisting in the military, he worked for Stowes Upholstery. 

In June 1941, Charles enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Fort Riley in Kansas. He was a private first class serving with Company G, 3rd Battalion, 21st Engineer Aviation Regiment. He participated in the Tunisian, Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno Campaigns. On August 23, 1945, Charles died of a heart attack while awaiting transportation in Italy. He is buried in Vale Cemetery in Schenectady, New York.
